How We Score Products

Every Tiny Tugz™ product is rated for health and sustainability so you can shop with complete confidence.

Shop With Confidence

Your child’s health matters. The planet they grow up on matters.

That’s why every Tiny Tugz™ product is rated (clearly and honestly) for Health and Sustainability.

We don’t guess. We don’t assume. We verify every material, every certification, every finish and every component before a product makes it onto our store.

Only products that score A⁺ to C are accepted.

How Our Rating System Works

Each product receives two independent scores:

1. Health Score

How safe is it for your child’s skin, lungs and daily contact?

2. Sustainability Score

How responsible are the materials, sourcing and environmental impact?

These scores help you shop with confidence: quickly, transparently and without greenwashing.

Health First. Child-Safe.

Because what touches your child matters

Tiny Tugz™ Health Score

A⁺ - GOLD STANDARD

The cleanest, safest materials available.

  • 100% natural or organic

  • Certified to top-tier safety standards (GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Class 1, COSMOS Organic, LFGB)

  • No plastics, no synthetics, no coatings

  • Ideal for newborns, sensitive skin and daily touch

Examples: Organic cotton clothing; untreated FSC wood toys; natural skincare with certified organic ingredients.

A - PREMIUM NATURAL BLEND

Mostly natural, with tiny safe synthetic elements.

  • At least 80% natural materials

  • Minimal synthetics (e.g., stitching, small trims)

  • No harsh chemicals, parabens, PVC or perfumes

  • Safe, gentle and perfect for everyday use.

Examples: OEKO-TEX® cotton items; natural products with small elastic components.

B - SAFE AND GENTLE

A mix of natural and synthetic materials — but fully certified safe.

  • Contains polyester, silicone, rubber, felt, or similar

  • Must have safety certification (OEKO-TEX®, CE, EN71-3, LFGB, REACH)

  • No hazardous substances

  • Great for toys, everyday accessories and durable products.

Examples: Certified soft toys; safe silicone items; mixed-material child accessories.

C - EVERYDAY SAFE

Predominantly synthetic but still independently certified and proven safe.

  • Over 50% synthetic content

  • Must have safety testing

  • Used for lighting, silicone products, and functional gear

  • Reliable and safe, but not natural.

Examples: Silicone tableware; electronic items with child-safe casings.

D - NOT ACCEPTED

These are products that might be safe, but cannot be proven safe due to missing certifications, low-quality materials or unknown manufacturing processes.

Typical reasons a product scores D (Health):

  • The product contains synthetics (PU, PVC, nylon, polyester) without any certification (OEKO-TEX®, CE, EN71-3, LFGB, REACH).

  • Unknown adhesives or coatings (e.g., cheap glues, solvent-based varnishes).

  • Foam components with no safety documentation (often off-gassing VOCs).

  • PU vegan leather with no testing — extremely common in low-cost products.

  • MDF / particle board with unknown binders (potential formaldehyde).

  • Skincare or deodorant without ingredient certification or allergen testing.

  • Products that claim “eco-friendly” or “natural” but offer no evidence.

Real-world examples of D-grade health items:

  • A PU baby backpack with soft padding but no OEKO-TEX or chemical test reports
  • A decorative MDF shelf with unknown varnish
  • A PU-coated highchair cushion with no documentation
  • A kids’ toy without CE marking
  • A silicone product that hasn’t undergone LFGB testing
  • A skincare balm with “natural ingredients” but no allergen or purity validation

E - ACTIVELY HARMFUL

This category includes dangerous, toxic, banned, or strongly discouraged substances.

These are products that have clear evidence of harm, not just missing documentation.

Typical reasons a product scores E (Health):

  • PVC containing phthalates (major endocrine disruptors in children)

  • BPA or BPS in plastics or food-contact items
  • Lead-based paints or pigments

  • Unshielded electronics, untested LED units, battery compartments that open easily

  • Cheap, solvent-based foams that release VOCs like toluene or formaldehyde

  • Toxic glues or industrial adhesives

  • Fragrance-heavy products with undisclosed chemical compounds

  • Cosmetics containing parabens, SLS/SLES, synthetic perfume (“parfum”), PEG compounds

  • Nickel-releasing metals in children’s accessories

  • Flammable or off-gassing materials used in kids’ bedding or clothing

Real-world examples of E-grade health items:

  • A PVC baby bib with detectable phthalates
  • A painted toy with lead contamination
  • A cheap night light with exposed circuits and no CE testing
  • A foam play mat with toxic off-gassing
  • A skincare product containing synthetic fragrance with allergenic compounds
  • A teether with BPA/latex contamination
  • A metal lunchbox clasp with nickel release
  • Counterfeit or low-quality electronics

Sustainable. Earth-Saving.

Because the planet they’ll inherit matters.

Tiny Tugz™ Sustainability Score

A⁺ - GOLD STANDARD

Our highest sustainability level.

A⁺ products are made from materials that are either:

• 100% natural, renewable and biodegradable

(e.g. organic cotton, linen, wool, FSC-certified wood)

OR

• 100% recycled natural fibres, fully certified

(e.g. GRS-certified recycled cotton)

These materials return safely to the earth or close the loop without microplastics, synthetic additives or environmental burden.

Examples:

  • FSC-certified wooden toys

  • GOTS organic cotton bedding

A - SUSTAINABLY MADE

A-grade products are made from deeply responsible materials, even if they aren’t fully natural.

This includes:

• 100% recycled synthetic fibres (GRS-certified)

(e.g. recycled polyester, recycled nylon)

• Or products made from ≥80% natural or recycled content

supported by safe, minimal materials where needed.

These materials reduce waste, conserve resources and support a circular economy while remaining durable and long-lasting.

Examples:

  • GRS-certified recycled polyester fleece

  • Recycled nylon bags

  • OEKO-TEX cotton items with small synthetic trims
B - RESPONSIBLE CHOICE

A thoughtful mix of natural and synthetic materials, used responsibly.

B-grade products:

  • Contain less than 50% virgin synthetic

  • Include certified safe components (OEKO-TEX®, CE, EN71)

  • May use upcycled, recycled or reclaimed materials

These are sustainable everyday choices where durability and responsibility meet.

Examples:

  • Upcycled leather slippers

  • Cotton cushions with polyester filling

  • Mixed-material toys with safe, certified components
C - EVERYDAY STANDARD

C-grade products contain more synthetic material, but are still independently tested and responsibly made.

These items:

  • Contain over 50% virgin synthetic material

  • Must have proper safety certifications (CE, EN71-3, OEKO-TEX®, RoHS)

  • Contain no harmful chemicals or unsafe plastics

These are safe, reliable everyday products — simply not as natural or circular as higher grades.

Examples:

  • Silicone mealtime products

  • LED night lights

  • Plastic-based toys and functional accessories
D - NOT ACCEPTED

Typical reasons a product scores D (Sustainability):

  • Virgin synthetic materials with no sustainability certification

  • Uncertified PU

  • MDF or engineered wood without FSC

  • Unknown, low-quality plastics

  • Products with unclear or undocumented sourcing

Real-world examples:

  • A backpack made from virgin nylon with no recycled content

  • Furniture made from non-FSC particleboard

  • A PU-coated item with no traceable safety or sustainability documentation

We do not stock D-rated products.

E - ACTIVELY HARMFUL

Materials or manufacturing processes with clear negative environmental impact.

E-grade items include materials linked to pollution, toxic production or long-term environmental harm.

Typical reasons a product scores E (Sustainability):

  • PVC with phthalates

  • Composite woods with harmful binders and high emissions

  • Virgin synthetics that shed microplastics heavily and cannot be recycled

  • Products made with deforestation-linked or untraceable raw materials

  • Single-use plastics or items destined for landfill

Real-world examples:

  • Virgin PVC plastic toys

  • Low-cost synthetic accessories with no recyclability

  • Non-FSC wood products using toxic glues

  • Decorative items made from cheap virgin plastic composites
